Nearly one in four U.S. children lives with a parent experiencing a substance use disorder, yet few caregivers and professionals feel equipped to talk with children about addiction, separation, recovery, and loss. This interactive workshop addresses that gap by introducing Lifebooks, a developmentally grounded narrative tool adapted by the SOFAR clinic at Boston Medical Center to help families explain difficult experiences with compassionate, child-centered language. Participants will review real-world examples, practice creating a Lifebook page, and develop skills in supporting children’s emotional processing and identity formation. The session provides concrete language, templates, and strategies that attendees can immediately apply in clinical, social service, and family settings.
