About the Role

Horizon Services, Inc. (HSI) is seeking a mission-aligned, community-driven Medical Director to lead and shape medical oversight at our new Gateway Medical Sobering Center in Albuquerque, NM. This critical leadership role will support the design, implementation, and stabilization of services for individuals experiencing substance use, co-occurring conditions, and acute intoxication in a safe, trauma-informed, harm-reduction setting.

You will play a pivotal part in guiding policy, shaping clinical culture, ensuring regulatory compliance, and helping us build one of the region’s first sobering centers grounded in public health principles and MAT-friendly practice.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide medical oversight for the Gateway Medical Sobering Center, including clinical consultation and policy review.

• Approve and develop clinical standing orders, detoxification protocols, and withdrawal management pathways.

• Guide implementation of harm reduction strategies, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and evidence-based SUD interventions.

• Collaborate with HSI’s RN-Program Manager and interdisciplinary team to promote continuity of care and referrals to the broader Albuquerque system of care.

• Attend quarterly case consultation or peer review meetings and participate in remote consultations, as needed.

• Review and approve staff training modules, medical documentation protocols, and relevant EHR workflows.

• Ensure medical protocols align with state and federal licensing requirements and best practices in trauma-informed care.

Time Commitment

• Estimated Average: 5-6 hours/week

• Start-Up Phase (Months 1–4): May require elevated hours to support staff onboarding,

standing order development, and regulatory readiness.


About the Gateway Medical Sobering Center

• Initial Capacity: 30 beds

• Target Utilization: 85% by Month 6

• Future Capacity: Designed for up to 49 beds or recliners

• Ramp-Up Period: Four months with a staged approach to staff hiring, training, facility readiness, and system integration

• Training Program: Robust training including DEI/CLAS, Motivational Interviewing, CPI de- escalation, MAT, and withdrawal scale administration


Qualifications

• MD or DO licensed to practice in the state of New Mexico (or ability to obtain licensure promptly)

• Board-certified in Addiction Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, or Family Medicine with experience in SUD care

• Experience in harm reduction, low-barrier care models, and MAT prescribing highly preferred

• Familiarity with triage center or sobering center models a plus

• Strong commitment to DEI, trauma-informed practices, and person-centered care

Compensation

• Competitive hourly rate, commensurate with experience

• Contract
